The Other Side of Time Keith Laumer 9780451052551 Books Reviews

I've read all of Laumer's books and for me, this was by far the best, the most interesting, complex, and rewarding. It's a mystery and told with great detail and consideration. I simply loved it and was pleasantly surprised to find a website dedicated to Keith Laumer here

The other review by "A Reader" is definately NOT about this book. Imperial Intelligence Agent Brion Bayard (formerly of the dimension/timeline we inhabit) finds himself in an mostly unexplored and unknown region of space and time after accidentially encountering beings from another dimension line setting up an invasion from a "dead" dimension line very close to the "prime" Zero Zero Stockholm line to which he was abducted in an earlier book. The whole Brion Bayard series is excellent and requires wrapping your brain around some seriously weird stuff.
The Other Side of Time (1965) is the second SF novel in the Imperium series, following Worlds of the Imperium.

In the previous volume, Brion was kidnapped by agents of Imperial Intelligence. He was rushed into a boxy vehicle and it moved away. He eventually learned from Winter that the Imperium was a crosstime polity.

Brion was taken to Stockholm Zero-Zero. He was interviewed by four men of importance to the Imperium Bernadotte, Bale, Richthofen, and Goering. Bale didn't seem to like him and the feeling was mutual.

Bernadotte introduced himself as a Swedish general. He explained the history of the Imperium and its rise after the invention of the Maxoni-Cocini drive. He said that the blight surrounding Zero-Zero -- the home world of the Imperium -- had resulted mostly from mistakes by other inventors of the drive.

However, there were three known undamaged timelines within the Blight Zero-Zero, Blight-Insular 2 and B-I 3.

In this novel, Brion Bayard is the son of French emigres who had died in a plane crash. He was a Major in the US Army during the war. Now he is a colonel in Imperial Intelligence and married to Barbro Lundin.

Manfred Rittmeister is Friherr of Richthofen and the Head of Imperial Intelligence.

Dzok is a Field Agent of the Authority. He is also an australopithecine.

In this story, Brion gets a call late in the summer evening from Richthofen. Manfred sounds rather embarrassed, but asks Brion to drop by headquarters. Brion tells Barbro where he is going while dressing for the outdoors.

Brion's car is started and ready when Brion reaches it. He drives off and two other cars fall in front and behind his. They escort him to Royal Intelligence headquarters.

Richthofen reluctantly interrogates Brion for over an hour. Then he dismissed Brion and says that he will brief him the next morning. On the way out of headquarter, Brion sees a redhot, man-shaped person come into the building.

Brion follows the charred footsteps of the person into the heart of the building. He eventually finds the person crouched over a body. When Brion jumps him, the person stretches out a hand and sparks flash out toward him.

A while later, Brion wakes and finds himself in a strange place. It looks like headquarters, but the lighting comes from below. He sees no others in the building and his car outside is dead.

Other cars on the street are also dead with their ignitions on. He sees a dead cat in the gutter, but nothing alive. He hears marching troops and hides in the shadows. He follows them to the Net Terminal Building. All the shuttles are also dead and powerless.

The troopers are taller than him and broader in the shoulders. They are stringing wires within the terminal. One sees Brion, but he shoots it with his slug gun. Then he steals into one of the strance shuttles and starts it.

The shuttle is powered, but locked onto a single destination. Brion breaks the power level trying to stop it. It finally stops in a gray, dim lighted alley. Then it goes through another change and normal colors appear.

The alley is full of trash and excretions. Brion get out, but a very large hairy man grabs him. He is taken through a confusing maze of alleys and streets. Eventually, he is hauled into a low building and locked into a cell.

Someone else is in the cell with him. The person tries various unknown languages in a pleasant voice. Finally, Brion says that he doesn't understand and the person shifts to an Anglic dialect.

Brion flicks on his lighter and sees that the person is very hairy. He is wearing a dirty white uniform. The person says that he is Dzok, a Field Agent of the IDMS. The Authority is the paramount government of the planets within the Web.

Brion and Dzok escape from the Hagroon. Dzok's shuttle is more complicated than the Imperial equivalent. The Authority has been using the Web for thousands of years.

This tale takes Brion to Authority Central at Zaj. Brin finds other australopithecines like Dzok as well as Rhodesians and Pekin derivatives on the planet. The only primates that are relatively hairless are very small and non-sapient.

Some of the hairy species are prejudiced against humans. One of these individuals is serving on the council to which Dzok reports. He doesn't believe anything Brion says.

The local council sentences Brion to deep hypnosis and throws him off the planet. He is carried to the recently discovered Blight-Insular 4 and left on the planet. Brion eventually works his way out of the false memories and tries to return to the Imperium.

Zero-Zero no longer exists within the Blight. The next installment in this sequence is Assignment in Nowhere.

Highly recommended for Laumer fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of advanced technologies, rank prejudice, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!
