Quest For War And One Green Beret Subsequent Evolution Mark Giaconia 9781534774698 Books
From the moment Green Beret Mark Giaconia begins describing his mandated mission to Sargat Valley, his details and description provide a sense of the heroic and brutal journey by American and Kurd forces to capture a chemical weapons facility held by Iraqi extremists. Intense, vivid recounting leading into and throughout the battle, pale only in the gruesome imagery of sights, sounds, and smells of post-battle task that reinforces the horror of war, leaving a dramatic image fixed in the reader’s mind.Quest for War: And One Green Beret’s Subsequent Evolution, by Mark Giaconia, carries a primary purpose of teaching, without readers realizing the path that they are following until the last two paragraphs in the “Now” chapter. The tone becomes earnest and parallels in seriousness to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s book, Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men, specifically to the questions that Rousseau asks his audience. The author displays a sincere humbleness in his portrayal of himself and other people in the book. While countless war books are prolific with their military jargon, which civilian readers would lack understanding, Giaconia explains everything concisely; permitting all readers insightful knowledge, even if it is only a fraction of the abomination as a result of war.
There is very little room for misunderstanding the author's intent. The book is written mostly matter-of-fact concrete language detailing his experiences, with some abstract imagery to expand on the epic-ness of the scenery, notable in chapter one.
Giaconia’s story correlates in facts with another book, Masters of Chaos: The Secret History of the Special Forces, by Linda Robinson (2005). In her book, specifically chapters thirteen and fourteen, Robinson interviews the team captain and the team sergeant (amongst many others) to form a great narrative of “Operation Viking Hammer” and the “Green Line.” The information she pulled is significant, but lacks the first person perspective that Quest for War succinctly provides in an easy to digest format.
The title of the book is the perfect epigraph of this work. The author connects on several occasions to general truths that resonate no matter one’s nationality or background. Saying this book is well worded would be a heavy understatement. Expertly written and well thought out, Quest for War carries an earnest message concerning conflict; that humankind should seek to understand and work together to solve overarching problems that divide humanity. Nothing less than the eradication of all war, should be the goal for world leaders. This book should be required reading for all incoming politicians before taking office.

Quest For War And One Green Beret Subsequent Evolution Mark Giaconia 9781534774698 Books Reviews
This is not what you'd expect in a book with a title like Quest for War, though the subtitle hints at the introspection that began basically from the first moment of combat. And that's saying something given the author is my brother and I thought I knew what he'd been through. I didn't. Honest, humble, and very human. In approachable terms, it vividly describes the horror of war, its lasting physical and psychological toll, and its many contradictions. Also interesting "on the ground" perspective on the major conflicts from the late 90s and early 2000s. Mark Giaconia is not a one dimensional green beret, and the book is not a one dimensional war story.
Amazing read.
Really compelling turn of events and character development. Starting from a young naive soldier, to a man with the weight of his actions and his new found intellectualism.
Mark. This was an awesome book. Very humble account of your evolution. I thought the introspection's were necessary for the reader to understand where you were coming from with certain situations. I really enjoyed the chapters on Bosnia. I thought they provided the reader a unique perspective on what a Green Beret's mission can be at times. Can't wait for the next book!
Thought provoking. Mark is extremely bright and gives a very intellectual view of war and people that will make people think.
Brilliantly written. It is hard to stop once you start reading. What I liked the most is that Mark is talking about an intense war situation with so much chaos and death around then suddenly the situation is paused and the reader is going through the thoughts that are running through the author's mind at that moment.
There are times when I had to break and give myself a moment to digest all the chilling details from a war environment. It is a thought provoking book straight from the heart of the author about his experiences and how he evolved in this journey. It is my pleasure to know him personally and my hearty congratulations to him on such a great first book. Looking forward to your next one Mark.
I really enjoyed the author's telling of his story. I appreciate the way he explains the events, then along the way, also talks about the things that he was feeling and thinking, and has some interesting insights into the conflicts he was involved in. There's actually a fair amount of humor scattered through the pages too. Honestly I wish the book was longer, because I was really enjoying reading it, and felt sad when I reached the end. One thing I wish he had done, is spend more time describing the personalities, etc of other men on his team, but I suppose that was not really the intended focus of the book. Anyway, I'd love to see more from this author in the future.
