Richard Long takes us on a jolting journey in the thriller/horror The Book of Paul, where he introduces us to an underground feudal world full of colorful characters and complex issues. We learn about feuding Irish clans, Kelly and O'Neil, with their roots reaching back centuries and their origins going back to the Druids. We are drawn into Paul's "wonderful" world of the occult and prophecies. We find Paul to be a vile villain with a twisted sense of humor. The narrator, William, crosses paths with the main pawns of this little chess game that has been "arranged" by Paul. Two star-crossed lovers, Martin and Rose, fight to protect each other and to stay together. As this novel unfolds, the reader discovers the surprising relations between all the players.

We uncover other seedy characters like Stryker, who is more than what he seems. Also, we meet Michael, who at first appears to be an orphaned and homeless young man. Yet, he plays an unusual part in this story.

Long is a master storyteller who perfectly places clues and foreshadowing throughout the story. His plot, characters, language and style are unique. The more horrified and shocked I was, the more I was driven to keep turning the pages to find out what was happening next.

Long leads us through a labyrinth of disturbed minds and distorted realities that are rooted in family secrets that have passed over centuries. This novel is full of themes and lessons. We learn the affects abuse can have on a person, and we watch Martin struggle through it as he tries to grasp happiness. Long mesmerizes us with his detailed psychology of his characters and his fresh dialogue. He serves us raw reality while peppering the darkness with Paul's humorous commentary.

Long's employing William as a narrator is a wise choice. It softens the graphic violence and chilling horror of Paul and Stryker as we gain details of the story and William's special insight. We feel William's sensitivity and see his struggle with his conscience. We follow his growth throughout the story. He is not the only one to go through a metamorphosis in this novel.

The Book of Paul is an unedited, raw account of the other side of life that respectable people pretend cannot exist. Yet, it is one thin layer beneath the surface. We are awakened to the paradoxical nature of humans as we unearth the evil and terror that exist within some of them. We watch as innocent people get what Paul thinks they deserve; if Paul had his way, he would clean the planet from their "infestations."

The Book of Paul may be too horrifying for some people, and it is not suitable for those under eighteen, as it has very adult themes of violence and sex.

Those adults who are able to give The Book of Paul a read, I greatly encourage you to do so. I'm sure you've never read a story quite like this one. The characters practically jump off the page! We almost become characters inside this story while looking on with shock and while cheering for Martin and Rose. By the end of this novel, you will have experienced a mind-bending adventure that can never be forgotten. The Book of Paul will rock your world to the core!

Long is a superb writer who has spun a breathtaking story. I give it more than ten stars!

The Book of Paul Richard Long 9780615648644 Books Reviews

I love this book and will soon embark on a 2nd read. I was addicted from the start and couldn't put it down for about a 5 days. This book is fascinating with it's religious history and the erotic nuances which creates a web that interconnects the characters. Each character in itself is so unique, complex and absorbing. This book is riveting and takes you thru a maze of history and paranormal sequences that is stirring and yet so emotionally titillating that I emerged exhausted from reading, the few times I actually had to put it down.

This is an amazing tale and should not be missed. I am elated to have discovered this book and the incredible author, Richard Long. I look forward to reading many more of his contributions to the literary world.
There's an old song that starts out, "You always hurt the ones you love".

In that case, Paul Kelly must adore his boys.

But he has his reasons, as do all sociopaths. However, his reasons transcend time and space, life and death, love and hate, lifetimes and generations. And those who are his "children" must learn these reasons first-hand.

There's Martin, rescued from his abusive mother by Paul. This boy learns early on that there are worse things than being locked in a basement for the weekend.

There's Michael, a homeless man living in a condemned building, who comes across Paul at exactly the wrong time--for Michael. He is taught the hard way that failure is not an option.

And there's William, a psychic and a collector of gruesome items. It is his passion for amassing the most awful of artifacts that gets him hooked up with Paul.

Then there's Rose, her only "crimes" being that she is female, and that she is a member of the wrong clan. (Here noted in Paul's eyes, if you're not a Kelly, you're in the wrong clan.)

Everything is going according to Paul's plan. The Book is being followed to the letter.

Then it all goes sideways. Martin, who Paul has brought up to feel nothing, even the most horrible of tortures, meets Rose. And something gets into the designs of the Book and threatens Paul's future.

Love.

And you can bet Paul's not going to let that continue.

What can I say? I was so very impressed with the way this book was crafted. Mr. Long is a fantastic storyteller, letting out the plot very slowly, excruciatingly slowly, but with such a deft hand that the reader is spellbound. Have you ever been given a present that, when you open it, is another box, with one inside that one, and so on? Eventually you get down to the very last box, and it is so wonderful to open it and find the gift lying inside? Mr. Long is like that with his story-telling.

However, it is a very psychologically complex book; one that cannot be rushed. There is so much to read and understand. Not that the prose is complex--but the characters are. You really have to get into their heads to understand why they are in circumstances that are the right "soil" for Paul to make such an impression on them. And Mr. Long does that; he leads you by the hand into their lives, their minds, their outlooks.

Be advised that this book is not for the faint of heart. Coarse language and brutal scenarios are part and parcel of this narrative. So, buying "The Book of Paul' for dear old Mrs. Johnson down the street, as a thank-you for taking care of your cat, would not be a good thing. Just so you know.

This is the first book in a series that Mr. Long is writing. And I can tell you, that is a necessary thing.

For not all happy endings end happily...
The Book of Paul is a wild story, with a strong pace, characters to invest in, gritty dialogue and interesting plot twists. The author delivers and creates a bizarre world inhabited by complex and vivid characters. The story is a rough ride but it has to be. The violence and sexuality serve the story well and never seemed gratuitous to me. The book is not without some nice touches of dark humor and dialogue. Richard Long knows how to turn a phrase and was masterful at setting up the next chapter/episode which kept the story moving at a suspenseful pace. The Book of Paul is wildly cinematic and could easily be translated to the screen emerging as a fantastic thriller. I'm looking forward to more from this author.
